The self-congratulatory popular account insists that Dr. King called on the nation to fully accept its own creed, and the walls came a-tumbling down. This conventional narrative is soothing, moving, and politically acceptable, and has only the disadvantage of bearing no resemblance to what actually happened.

About This Quote

People don't like it when their heroes look like they made a mistake or that they didn't plan for everything to go as smoothly as possible. Everyone wants to be portrayed as the perfect person and everyone wants to be remembered as the greatest hero. Dr. King had his faults, but he was a very compassionate and compassionate man.

His work had flaws, but so do many others. He was not perfect but he was not a bad person or an evil man. He was a man of great passion and of great virtue who led the Civil Rights movement and changed the world for the better.

The story we all know about him is just not true.
